Blueberry Green Tea

Tea of the day: Blueberry Green Tea by Harney and Sons [bagged]

Description: Chinese green tea has been artfully blended with lemongrass, blueberry, and vanilla to create a brew that is sure to hit all the right notes

Before steeping, smells very strongly of blueberries, as in fresh picked from the bush. Sweet and tangy

In the cup, the blueberry smell remains strong. Liquor is a bright greenish yellow. Has a slight grassy smell to it.

At first, tastes slightly tart and earthy but the finishing note is all blueberry. It’s so potent that, unlike most of the green teas I’ve had, this needs a decent amount of sugar to take the edge off. Perhaps a bit too strong, though not undrinkable

Tea rating: 3/5

Today we’re going off on a less serious tangent, and I’m going to talk about the different types of people I see at the gym. This is all based purely on what I have seen without talking to anyone or following people around, just casual observations

The Gym Beauty:

Typically a thin, young (or young looking) woman who’s style of dress might very from the very cleavage bearing to the more practical but is always done up. As in: perfect makeup, perfect hair, probably wearing a noticeable amount of jewelry, and so on. Whatever gym attire she is wearing is always in pristine condition and fits well.

The Look How Hard I Work Out:

Opposite of a Gym Beauty, but in a deliberately exaggerated fashion. No makeup, or slightly smeared eye liner/mascara, hair pile in some kind of messy, crazy-looking updo on top of her head that probably will not actually stay once she begins working out. Often wears a top that is way too big

The Hardcore Chick

All props to this lady, she works her ass off, and it shows. Think the Jillian Michaels of your local town, awe-inspiring and often stronger than most of the dudes who are giving her sidelong glances. Very practical in dress, often has water-bottle and notebook to record her reps with her

The I Never Do Leg Day

These gents are often seen in front of the mirrors doing various exercises with their upper bodies while looking intensely at their reflections in the mirror. Usually wear muscle tees or tank tops but loose shorts (almost as if they know on some level how silly their stick legs look). Not uncommon to see in groups

The Gym Buddy

This dude is very rarely seen alone. He does do reps, but spends a lot of time chatting with the dudes he came in with, and with anyone else nearby he can engage in conversations with. If he’s with a group that has a strong leader type in it, will do more work than if he’s with a group of buddies just like him.

The Hardcore Dude

Very focused dude, clearly there to push himself as hard as he can on the chosen area of the day. Much like the Hardcore Chick with the practical dress and notebook carrying. Is often not with anyone else and is clearly not there to socialize.

The Couples

Hard to tell if these pairs are dating or just friends at times, particularly with the ones who appear to be in their 20’s. Typically the guy appear to be coaching the girl on what do to/how to do it and doesn’t do a lot of work himself. The pairs where the guy is coaching but does just as much work as the girl are the most fun to watch, because yay partnership!

The Newbie

Guy or girl, this person is obviously new to the whole gym thing. Often looks a bit startled and will apologize a lot if confronted with someone who seems to know what they’re doing. Wants to do well, so spends time examining each piece of equipment used, reading instructions, etc. Not uncommon to see him or her with some kind of pre-printed chart in a notebook or on a clipboard. This type is usually seen during the less busy times of the day/week, when they can get help from people who work at the gym. I always want to high-five these types, because I know from experience the courage it takes to even show up to a gym the first few weeks

The Average Joe/Jane

Someone who comes to the gym clearly intending to work out, but not to the degree of the hardcore types mentioned before. Some just do some form of cardio and go home. Others have a routine that works out the whole body roughly equally (at least visually) and seem to like to stick to that routine. Your average types tend also to be the ones who bring consistent friends who eventually get their own gym memberships. Most commonly seen weekdays in the early evening.

Of course, as with anything in life, there are variations in between each one of the types I mentioned, as well as people who vary between types. Just a fun thing to do for me since I’m one of the weird ones who doesn’t bring music with me, even when I’m by myself so my mind wanders a little. Maybe you can identify these types next time you’re at the gym, or make up a few of your own!

“Meanwhile, let us have a sip of tea. The afternoon glow is brightening the bamboos, the fountains are bubbling with delight, the soughing of the pines is herd in our kettle. Let us dream of evanescence and linger in the beautiful foolishness of things.”
